== The Project ==
The assignment for this project was to create a papier mache sculpture that stood up on its own. After the structure was created, were to go through the papier mache layers and then make it have a texture of our choice.
== My Process ==
Before I started on this art project I had to sketch out ideas I had and how I was going to approach it. I also made a clay sculpture that I based the papier mache off of. Then I had to cut out cardboard pieces and glue them together to create the structure (bones) of the koala. After the layout was finished, I stuffed it with newspaper to add muscle and tone. Finally, I glued layers of papier mache to the newspaper and then added the textures I wanted on top of that.
The steps in making this work of art that were most important to me was planning and basing off of the clay sculpture. Using my clay sculpture made it a lot easier to see exactly where I needed to add muscle and tone to my koala bear. The planning process is always very helpful for me so I can see what I want to do before actually doing it. One part of the process that was a little difficult for me was the creation of the skeleton of my koala. It was hard for me to figure out how wide I needed to make its body and head. It was also hard for me to figure out how to keep it symmetrical and balanced on both sides of its body. I stayed patient and used problem solving to overcome my difficulties. After I did some of the outline, it was easier to figure out what needed to go where.
== The Theme ==
My sculpture/drawing represents a koala hanging on a tree in a forest. I really wanted to make another animal because I think making animal art projects is the most fun. Koalas interest me a quite a bit and I think they are adorable so I wanted to create one of my own!
Conclusion
I really enjoyed doing this project. Like the clay sculpture, I really enjoy the hands on work and creating a 3D object versus drawing it. It took some time, but I thought it was fun trying to find creative materials to put on my koala and make it come to life. I want to improve on the layers of papier mache. I thought I did pretty well covering the entire body, but I feel like next time I could cover it thicker to make it less squishy. On my koala, the arms and legs are a tad squishy and you can tell there is stuffed newspaper in them.
