These are my final pictures for my soap stone project.
== The Project ==
The assignment for this project was to carve an object out of soap stone. It could be symbols, letters, shapes, etc. I wanted to carve something small but with lots of meaning.
== My Process ==
Before I started on this art project I had to write down the ideas I had. My ideas included a cross, a heart, the letter K for my name and SAM spelled out. Then I had to choose soap stones that would work the best for what I was shaping. Then I drew the shape on the soap stone with a sharpie. The steps in making this work of art that were most important to me were the outlining of the shapes. Without the “guidelines” of the shape it would have been very hard to make the shape desired. One part of the process that was a little difficult for me was the drilling. It was very hard for me to drill through the stone to make a hole for the necklace. I asked my partners to help me hold it in place.
== The Theme ==
My sculptures represent a heart and the word SAM spelled out. I made the heart for my sister who is going off to college as a graduation present. I created the letters SAM for my friend Sam’s birthday. I made them both as decorations to hang off their mirrors in their cars.
== Conclusion ==
I really enjoyed doing this project. It was something totally different from what I have ever done. It was a small and easy project to do. I definitely want to do this again in the future. When I do it again, I want to improve on my distribution of weight on the shapes. With my S, I made the inside too thin and it broke in half. It was really hard to glue the pieces back together and make them stay.
