== The Project ==
The assignment for this project was to create a clay Marquette and paint it. This was a miniature version of my next koala project, the papier mache. This helped me get an idea of what I wanted my papier mache project to look like.
== My Process ==
Before I started on this art project I had to write down all of the animals I wanted to create. I had it narrowed down to a penguin or a koala, but I figured a koala would be a bit different and more unique
Then I had to create a sketch of what I wanted the koala to look like. I also printed off a picture of a real life koala so I had something to base the looks off of. For example, I could have had it sitting down, standing, or hanging off/upside down from a tree. I chose to have it hanging off a tree in a sitting position. I then painted it after it was fired.
The steps in making this work of art that were most important to me
were the planning parts. Without the sketches, it would have taken me a very long time trying to create a 3D image of the koala bear. The picture was very helpful in creating it as well to see what the animal actually looked like. I probably would not have gotten the colors correct just basing it off of my previous knowledge of a koala.
One part of the process that was a little difficult for me was the painting. At first, it was kind of hard for me to understand what colors mixed well with others. The more I painted, the better I got with colors and shades. I practiced with trial and error.
== The Theme ==
My sculpture represents a koala sitting/hanging on a tree. Koalas are one of my favorite animals, so I thought it would be cool to make a 3D sculpture of one. I thought adding the tree would be a nice addition so it showed the koala in its habitat in a way instead of just the animal.
== Conclusion ==
I really enjoyed doing this project. I liked this better than the wire sculpture. I found that I am actually pretty good at creating clay sculptures. Drawing pictures of animals is really challenging for me, but when I create a sculpture its easier for me to make it realistic.
I want to improve on my painting next time. I wish I would have spent more time planning which colors I would use before I applied them onto my koala. Next time I will experiment with the colors and see what they look like on a paper and decide whether I want to use them or not.
